The Metamer Quarterly is Live

The Metamer Quarterly & Analog Art Subscription is live.

The Metamer Quarterly & Analog Art Subscription is an experiment in making, form, material, and sustenance, and it is live.

Each quarter I will make an artist's book on a particular subject, exploring it visually and physically, and producing it in a small edition. The ampersand in the title joins the timing and the object that will arrive in the mail; The Quarterly is the Analog Art.

The first issue is on metamerism. Metamerism refers to the spectral variance between colors that appear to match in some lighting situations, but not in others. For example, the socks you paired in the dark of your room may match in daylight, but not in your office’s fluorescent lighting. This shift is due to differences in the spectral power distribution of each color. The colors with this relationship are called metamers. The phenomenon is fascinating in itself, and provides a jumping off point for exploring the voice and substance of color and perception.

I am looking for both subscribers and collaborators. I am looking for hand-drawn maps and diagrams to include in the next edition, and I’d also like to explore more direct and intentional collaborations down the line. The form below provides a way to respond to all these requests. (Please do note that prices for ordering future issues individually may increase. That is the potential advantage to a subscription.)

My commitment is to making a series of eight of these artist's books. After Metamerism, the planned subjects are:  Maps and Diagrams, The Book of Love, The Sea, Time, < no subject >, The Cabin and the Stone House, and Sound. I will post images of each completed artist’s book here on The Metamer Quarterly blog, and they will be available for order at that time as well.

If you would like to order The Metamer Quarterly & Analog Art Subscription in advance, please check out the post "The Movement of Small Green Pieces of Paper", and/or write to me at LScott, The Metamer Quarterly, PO Box 725, Sherburne, NY, 13460

i am for sure

Do you know Claes Oldenburg's not-a-manifesto?

In 1961, it started out "I am for an art that is political-erotical-mystical, that does something other than sit on its ass in a museum..."

and ended, "I am for the art of abandoned boxes, tied like pharaohs. I am for an art of water tanks and speeding clouds and flapping shades.

I am for US Government Inspected Art, Grade A art, Regular Price art, Yellow Ripe art, Extra Fancy art, Ready-to-Eat art, Best-for-Less art, Ready-to-Cook art, Fully Cleaned art, Spend Less art, Eat Better art, Ham art, pork art, chicken art, tomato art, banana art, apple art, turkey art, cake art, cookie art…"

and of course, Wikipedia has something to contribute as well.

How are artists' books sold and priced? I feel obligated to provide this link, too.

and this one...

and lastly, note that an art book, which might sometimes be called an artist book,

is not an artist's book.
